[STUDENT SHOWS 2011] Taught within separate studios, students choose to specialise in particular areas. Vying for places in certain studios creates a competitive attitude among the students
There isn’t a rigid school style as such, each unit is taught very differently and the work produced completely varies between each studio. That said, much of the work was highly conceptual; unit titles include What People Do, Fragments and Nets, Moments Along a Journey and Enveloped Territories.
The school’s purpose-built studio made an excellent space for displaying students’ work. With its double-height ceilings, the studio was particularly good for displaying full-size concrete facade models. Work was organised into studios and there was an obvious route of progression through the work.
Alex Stevens, who has achieved one of the highest grades the course has seen. His work was given pride of place within the show. Stevens’ final project was for a library in Havana, part of the Stillness and Ghosts unit. The idea was to create opportunities for local people and he had taken into account the social and cultural context of the area. His drawings and renders of the project showed particular attention to detail.
Marcus Andren’s project focused on urbanisation within China for the Enveloped Territory unit. The text by Alejandro Zaero Polo, The Politics of the Envelope, provided a theoretical basis for the project. Marcus had produced a variety of models and some interesting design development sketches.
