Gary Palmer reviews the Leeds School of Art, Architecture and Design’s end of year show
The school is housed in one of the North’s truly word-class buildings and the inspiration this should provide is manifest sporadically throughout the show, which is an eclectic affair. There are several examples of thoughtful community architecture, elegantly responses to interesting briefs, attractive plays on Snelson’s tensegrity sculptures and some well-crafted, collapsible structural models.
Elsewhere, one is either filled with unfathomable merriment or plunged into unmitigated despair at various burnt lumps of wood, origami, a bike on a pop-up beach and a dismembered boot. It’s commendable that so many students have been given space to show their work and this adds to the feeling that Caractacus Potts might just jump out at any moment brandishing a Toot Sweet.
Standout units & students
Project Office, a staff/student collaboration, produced sensitive and meaningful small-scale architecture, driven by ethical and social concerns, the testimonies from the students being particularly telling. Harry Hewlett’s Beyond the Big Top is a thorough piece of work in kinetic architecture, Nick Wright’s Granada Shaded Market produced some handsome imagery of internal space and external place, while Jack Brown’s and Jamie Aldus’ Archive projects are both deftly executed.
