Characterise the school’s approach
Architectural education has returned to Hull and is set within the Faculty of Arts at Hull College. This year the first student cohort completed the BA Hons in Architectural Design which has achieved ARB Prescription and RIBA Candidate status for Part I. The exhibition of final year work is small with seven students showing their work.
All projects were set within the post industrial River Hull Corridor in the City and as well as evidencing their skills and knowledge of individual building design the exhibition demonstrates the students’ (and schools’) exploration of the relationship between architecture and urban regeneration. The model used reflects the lessons learnt from a student trip to Germany in October with many of the students referencing the post industrial site at Zolverein as a generator of their thinking. As you might expect at this level the solutions offered demonstrate a range of achievement, with the better students clearly enjoying the challenge.
The River Hull corridor masterplan and proposed interventions breathe new life into the city – great ambition.
Dominic Hornsby and Tom Smith’s proposals concentrated on two of the redundant Riverside Mills, recognising them as standout landmarks within the new park.
Dominic’s proposal for a new arts community uses an analogy of the original processes carried out on the site to organise the new proposals which include, a large Exhibition Hall which allows for the craning of shipping containers onto high level vantage points for use by start-up businesses, a Rotating Auditorium and a new gatehouse to the site.
Tom’s proposal recognises the importance of Joseph Rank’s original Mill by offering an alternative to its imminent (and controversial) demolition, by proposing conversion and new build facilities for the Rank Foundation. The proposal acts as a counterpoint to Terry Farrell’s Deep building within a new riverside park.
The range of work carried out by all students is ambitious and demonstrates the intent of the school to use the City of Hull as a test bed. In some ways the exhibition demonstrates that both the school and the city are, to use a maritime expression often used in the city, in the ‘same boat’. Both are trying to re-establish a position of strength, and the benefits of this new symbiotic relationship between school and City should bring benefit to each.
