Stephen Lawrence Prize shortlist: House No7 by Denizen Works

This house for an expanding family was conceived as two houses in one, shaped around the local microclimate. A refurbished local vernacular black house sits adjacent to more agricultural accommodation, designed to give the feeling of development over time. The two houses, one for guests and one for our clients to use all year round, create separate territories perfect for family gatherings or quiet retreat.

The hall, a kind of covered external area, links the two houses, creating a generous connecting space with ample room to remove sandy wellies or to have quiet conversation.

From the outside, the house has an intentionally bunker-like quality, protecting against the elements, with deep-set windows in thick, raking stone walls and expanses of unpunctured corrugated cladding in steel and concrete. In contrast, the inside is full of light, with views carefully positioned to frame the surrounding landscape.
