Stephen Lawrence Prize shortlist: Tree House by 6a Architects
The tree house was one of the smallest projects in the studio but with a complexity and challenge to its brief that could rival some of our largest. Our clients had pragmatic needs to fulfil without compromising the pair of listed terraced cottages that is their home, alongside qualitative priorities that were both wonderful and difficult to achieve.
The family was united in their brief to keep all the trees in their garden and not to encroach on it. Lizzie Treip needed to be able to get to her bedroom, bathroom, garden and living room in her wheelchair. When resting she liked to be able to see the garden.
We reused all we could, enclosing and ramping the existing verandah and, with a nod to the garden fence, cladding a new timber-framed low building along its length in reused timber skimmings that grey as they age. It curves round the trees with a ramped interior leading to the new rooms.
