[Registration must be completed by 24 October] The CERN research laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland has launched a design competition for a new public area and entrance

The 3.8 million Euro project seeks to create a one hectare public area at the institute’s main site in the Meyrin suburb of Geneva.

Part of CERN’s ‘campus’ redevelopment project, the new facility is scheduled to start on site in 2013 and is part of a bid to improve facilities for the institutes 10,000 daily users.

The contest, which is single-stage, asks entrants to submit proposals for both an ‘ideas competition’ and a ‘design and build competition’.

The first contest focuses on CERN’s ‘structure and layout’ and has a prize fund of 80,000 Swiss Francs.

The second part is concerned with the design and build of a new ‘emblematic’ public entrance and reception area to the institute. The prize fund for the winner is 120,000 Swiss Francs.

Entrants must submit proposals for both parts of the competition.
