Hastings Pier Regeneration Scheme

The RIBA has re-launched the Hastings Pier design competition, which it put on hold earlier this month following the structure’s near total destruction

With little of the partially-listed 1872 Eugenius Birch-designed tourist attraction remaining, the competition brief has been revised, but the process remains unchanged.

Hastings Pier was almost completely destroyed in a suspected arson attack on 5 October.

Update from RIBA competitions, 25 October

Following the fire in the early hours of the morning on 5th October, the decision has been taken to proceed with the competition to select an architect for the pier redevelopment. A sub-structural survey, commissioned by Hastings Borough Council, was carried out on the 11th October to assess the damage caused by the fire. The result of this suggests that whilst damage to the pier is substantial, there has been minimum impact to the columns of the sub-structure. Some emergency work to stabilise the pier needs to be done immediately, but the original ambition behind this project remains and anamended brief has been uploaded. This is a replacement to the original version issued which should now be disregarded.

Update from RIBA competitions, 5 October

This update follows today’s terrible news about the fire on Hastings Pier.  A structural survey to assess the damage to the pier’s substructure will be carried out as a matter of urgency.   It is everyone’s hope that the substructure of the pier (in its entirety or in part) will still be useable.  Should this be the case the intention will be to proceed with plans for the competition, albeit with an amended brief.  A meeting will be held in Hastings next Monday (11th October) with the engineers, soon after which further information regarding the state of the remaining structure should be known.  A follow up statement will be issued as soon as a report is available, meantime the competition is on hold, and next week’s submission deadline of 14th October no longer applies.  Anyone wishing to be kept up to date with developments should contact RIBA Competitions.  Architects already registered will be contacted directly.
