Waste processed at this facility will be collected from a 11km radius, and pre-sorted at other waste transfer facilities or directly at source by local businesses. Approximately 50 per cent of the waste will be biodegradable.

The proposed building has a steel portal frame with translucent polycarbonate cladding panels. Both the waste reception and energy generation halls will be naturally ventilated and toplit through a central rooflight. The design approach is to create a crisply detailed long box on a linear site parallel to the A13. The arrangement of spaces reflects the building’s internal functions and all waste handling takes place within the building perimeter.

Large quantities of hot water, a by-product of the cooling system of the electricity generating turbines, are intended to be used to heat other buildings in the Sustainable Industries Park and nearby homes.
