A five-arch winery overlooked by Peñafiel castle in north-west Spain. The building sits on a stone plinth and has laminated timber trusses and a terracotta tile-covered roof supported by steel arms.
Judges’ comments ‘The volume is deceptive: below the whole site is a double-height basement for the storage [and bottling] of wine – a vast area enjoying steady environmental conditions analogous to the great caves that still exist within the hillside. This is a very memorable building that succeeds brilliantly in fulfilling its purpose.’
