Daredevil’s New York
In the mid-eighties writer Frank Miller and artist Dave Mazzucelli created a hellish vision of New York that would provide the template for a thousand gritty comic book tales. A forerunner to Frank Miller’s Gotham City in the Dark Knight Returns and the scuzzy parts of Alan Moore’s New York in Watchmen, this New York is the comic book world’s original urban nightmare. Crumbling tenements. Dingy alleyways. Graffiti-soaked subway carriages. Flickering lampposts.
But Miller and Mazzuchelli captures the city’s glamour too: Hotel lobbies have magenta-coloured walls and exotic potted plants. A penthouse office overlooks Manhattan’s twin towers. Slick high rise towers - International style – glow yellow in the sun.
Mazzuchelli is a four-colour master – imagine a superhero comic drawn in the style of a Michael Mann film – and with the same kinetic energy. Best. Eighties. Marvel. Comic. Ever. Nuff said.
