The Liverpool-based practice have extended the RIBA Award-winning headquarters (AJ 08/05/2003) it built for Ashfield Healthcare in 2003 to expand the building’s training capacity and provide it with additional services.
A first floor extension, constructed above a balancing pond next to the original headquarters, continues the building’s existing internal central ‘boulevard’. The new space contains training rooms, an enlarged kitchen and restaurant, toilets and circulation spaces including a training facilities reception, escape core, feature staircase and lift.
Additional management facilities have been placed above this extension in a second floor pavilion, which incorporates open plan break-out space, meeting rooms, insular offices and a central storage.
The envelope of the ‘penthouse’ incorporates a chamfered elevation, that provides solar protection to the south facing glazing, and an external terrace to the north.

The expansion to Ashfield House endeavors to provide the required additional facilities outlined by Ashfieldin2focus, whilst providing an appropriate piece of architecture which sits comfortably with the existing building and the surrounding environment.
Shedkm’s primary aim was to preserve the exiting buildings coherency, language and design ambition, provide logical and simple transition between the new and old facilities, whilst inserting a strong new design aesthetic.
