Sadler Brown completes Ripon College student housing

  • Comment

Sadler Brown Architecture’s Harriet Monsell House at Ripon College, in Oxfordshire, has welcomed its first students

The Newcastle and Manchester-based practice’s student housing block stands opposite Niall McLaughlin Architects’ Stirling Prize-shortlisted Edward King Chapel, and was built by the same contractor, Beard.

Built in the South Oxfordshire green belt, the four-storey block is aligned with an existing college wing, taking its form from its neighgbour.

The new block is the same height as the older buildings and has a large, steeply pitched roof punctuated by two ‘massive’ buttressed chimney stacks.

Each of the two gable ends are constructed of masonry, brickwork at one end and natural stone at the other, with the long elevations and the roof clad with sustainably sourced West African ‘frake’ timber.
