Very very beautiful, but the inference that operational carbon is at all low seems hard to swallow give the expansiveness of the plan, the amount of glass and the rather think layers of insulation. This sort of architecture is simply not driven by sustainable aims in spite of the support team's clear resolve to do their utmost. Based on the quoted data this is a 5-10 tonner annually.

Kate and Trimtrab make a good point on VAT. A petition is on-going to reduce VAT on retrofit. All our profession please support this

Great piece. Great idea and what a way to engage the minds of tomorrow!
Every school should be having events like this, including dare I say it schools of architecture....

I was greatly moved when I visited too. We need to stand up together and we can change things. Thank you for writing this piece and standing up.
Next time lets all take the whole office!
The RIBA should indeed declare an emergency.

Well done the AJ for publishing this!
Such an important subject that is so frequently overlooked. And written by THE expert on the subject.
It is a matter of great regret that the architectural professional on the whole has done so little to promote POE seriously. Collectively surely, we can be stronger? Greta Thunberg would encourage us to be just a little bolder?
My practise does now offer POE on all projects that we take on, and end doing something on most. It does take a little time but less than one might imagine. This is very much the start of a journey but the lessons so far have caused us to change our process and approach. This I believe is leading us to be better designers, delivering better outcomes. Ultimately that is good business sense too.
Waiting for beyond 2020 for what Bordass calls for would be genuinely tragic. Those of us now in middle age will live to regret it deeply if we don’t get behind his call to action.
