City chief slams Pickles over 'ridiculous' Smithfield decision

No one should be surprised by Pickles decision, it is consistent with his track record of flawed decisions. One only has to look at the Luton Airport fiasco, how can the owner, Luton Borough Council who is also the planning authority be left to grant its own planning permission without independent input? It is quite clear that his decisions take no account of the requirements of local communities or business. What is surprising is the vitriolic response from some of your readers. As someone who passes through the area regularly I looked at the scheme and listened to Geoff Harris explaining their intentions. It is a scheme that is sorely needed and Mark Boleat is absolutely correct in his comments regarding the lack of a co-ordinated strategy by this coalition. Hopefully Pickles will be replaced this week by someone who will actually bother to visit the areas in question before putting pen to paper. Martyn Love
