Our public land is being squandered

The passing reference to the Plc housebuilders could do with not so much expanding as blowing sky-high. A current sojourn for nearly a year in South Devon has opened my eyes to just how much a mixture of greed, cynicism and incompetence is influencing the behaviour of at least some of the mass housebuilders - everything from usurious leasehold scams to absolutely dreadful construction quality - extending to the omission of cavity firestops on an industrial scale by one developer - and the strong-arming of local authorities to relax design standards or face delays in provision of much needed houses. I don't think it's being too far fetched to liken it to organised crime, and the only obvious explanation for its success is the chronic shortage of the product on offer.
