Caruso St John and Jeremy Deller’s Peterloo Memorial completed for 200th anniversary

Looks a bit low key and insipid. I would have preferred a figurative rendition of the scene, cast in bronze, showing the drunken yeomanry charging into the crowd of men, women and children, who were attending a lecture on democracy, peacefully. I think that would communicate the full horror of the unlawful and barbaric massacre of innocent people and babes in arms. This was the UK’s Tiananmen Square, and it appears that it can still happen today, at any time. For example, the quelling of the miners’ strike and the poll tax riots. Will armed cavalry charges be used to quell civil unrest resulting from the chaos of a no-deal Brexit, for example? I think we know that the answer is yes, as BoJo already has history of purchasing water cannons to wash the peasantry off the streets. Brexitloo, coming to a place near you, very soon. Be afraid, be very afraid.
