Chipperfield leads calls for Mac to be rebuilt

I think a Neues Museum / Astley Castle type approach to the remaining fabric, with an eye towards history but primarily looking ahead at function is the only way forward for the Mac. Wholesale demolition for a completely new building isn't going to satisfy many. Based on photographs and footage of the charred remains, a 'faithful restoration' is likely to involve demolition and virtually a total rebuild. Restoration isn't an applicable word for the task. A pragmatic and careful approach to retaining what is leftover, whilst inserting new walls and additions, will preserve more of the original fabric and create opportunities which reflect the actual history of the building. The fires are now a part of the building's history and whatever is done should reflect and acknowledge that.
