Can rooftop extensions help solve the housing crisis?

As usual with this current housing crisis we need to advance using every avenue. The middle class, middle age nimbies and their architectural running dogs in their 60s need to be sent to the home in Battersea or Switzerland?! The mass housing of the 19th and early 20th centuries are ripe for extension due to solid timber floors/roofs and wide roads. Shame they forgot about the founds?! And why do green field housing builders use gang nail trusses rather than Metsec purlins and 40 degree pitches? A preference for an open plan ground floor makes a rear extension, with a central staircase makes a 2 storey extension very doable? Buy a small house and extend as the family and income expands, then convert into 2 retirement flats? With a 2 man DIY lift? A basement would make 2 maisonettes? 25 metres between backs will ensure sufficient light. As ever Planners have no experience or imagination, being development controllers protecting their jobs, and no go ahead attitude. Councillors are thinking of the next election. Already in purdah for this May! And what happened about leasehold reform, so that shared freeholds could become the norm in large blocks. The Edwardian mansion blocks were very economical and fostered a community spirit with shared gardens and elegant off the shelf entrances. And perhaps a concierge to take on the daytime deliveries? Come on guys and gals, get a grip; it really in’t rocket science, and the Eastern Europeans are here to help us and themselves? Ever heard of pattern books and Building Societies? Get a pension and a lifetime mortgage where appropriate. David
