Red Ken: No mates rate for Arsenal FC

  • Comment

A footballing tale from Astragal’s little chat with Ken Livingstone over a nice cold beer

Apparently, until January 2004, Islington Borough Council rigidly enforced a height ceiling of 30m on construction. This was all very well until Arsenal FC decided it wanted to build a new stadium. Would the council relax its policy to ensure a world-class facility could be built? ’Course not. According to our Ken, the height limit was strictly enforced, resulting in the concave roof we see today. Nothing wrong in that you say? Not if you don’t mind the extra £5 million it cost on special drainage. ‘That’s £5 million that could have gone on Section 106 projects or housing,’ mused the ex-London Mayor.
