Architects seeking the go-ahead for speedy demolitions beware

English Heritage has been tasked with an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the listing potential of buildings and bridges along Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s entire 187km-long Great Western Main Line.

The 176-year-old engineering masterpiece is about to undergo a £350 million electrification overhaul.

Owner Network Rail petitioned English Heritage to carry out the work in a proactive bid to avoid any last-minute listings of bridges that could threaten to derail the project. The outcome of a public consultation, launched by English Heritage in April, will be published this summer.

But with all this extra workload at the heritage body, the likelihood of a quick turnaround on requests for, say, a certificate of immunity from listing would certainly appear diminished.
