  • Comment on: Boris hits out at Heathrow as Estuary Airport plans face rejection

    Paul Finch's comment 2 September, 2014 3:40 pm

The Airports Commission has displayed all the imagination and long-term thinking that we have come to expect from British organizations created to make a politcal problem vanish, rather than think about the future of the country and the economy. Sir Howard Davies, who presided over the useless Financial Services Authority, has done London and Londoners a massive disservice. Let's hope that while Borish Johnson and Daniel Moylan are politically active that the Norman Foster estuary airport initiative can still succeed. Paul Finch

  • Comment on: RIBA backs building on greenbelt

    Paul Finch's comment 2 July, 2014 9:19 am

Building on Green Belt is the last resort of the desperate or the unimaginative. We should be doing more within existing city boundaries, where there is rarely a shortage of sites, just a shortage of political will-power to transform them into homes. There is no such thing as a Green Belt site that has outlived its usefulness; where it is scrappy land, the answer is not to build on it but to green it with woods and gardens. Paul Finch

  • Comment on: RIBA changes tack on ARB abolition

    Paul Finch's comment 24 March, 2014 10:05 am

Protection of title has done nothing to promote the cause of architects or architecture. It is a fig-leaf for the declining economic and cultural status of the profession. It should go, along with the ARB which would of course be redundant. The RIBA would be the independent representative of chartered architects and fully responsible for professional matters. Its new policy on ARB is a dud, because it is based on a fallacy about other people calling themelves architects. Fraud legislation covers this off. Paul Finch

  • Comment on: London Plan snags Farrell’s Earls Court vision

    Paul Finch's comment 13 December, 2011 9:22 am

Imagine that the current proposal actually existed. Now imagine that what is really on the site were being proposed as a planning application: protestors would be suffering paroxysms. It puts things into perspective. Similarly, if Battersea Power Station did not exist but was being proposed, the antis would be spitting feathers. There are too many people mired in a sea of knee-jerk nimby-itis conjoined with sentimentalism. This kills cities. Paul Finch

  • Comment on: Farrells to re-examine Vauxhall Cross gyratory

    Paul Finch's comment 21 October, 2011 12:23 pm

The Skywalk proposal is a 21st century idea which would resolve an otherwise intractable problem, and form part of a real route between Battersea Power Station and Waterloo. It shouldn't be written out of the script just yet.
