Over: the Horizon in Hackney

  • Comment

Sad news ahoy as the Horizon school in Hackney, designed in the 1970s by AJ’s own cartoonist Louis Hellman while working at the Greater London Council, is set to be demolished

Despite objections by parents and local residents, a £25 million scheme to demolish the ‘beautiful and exquisite’ (© Louis Hellman) Horizon and build a new school by Gollifer Langston Architects on the site has been recommended for approval by Hackney Council’s planning officers.

A planning decision is expected to be ratified at a planning committee this Thursday (12 May). The project aims to bring together two special needs schools on one site.

Hellman is not best pleased. He said: ‘[Horizon school] will be replaced by an ugly, lumpen shed crammed on to most of the site.’
