  • In a healthy democracy Mr Johnson would have been seen for what he is by now, and 'let go' from any public position of power and authority without further ado.

    The example of another ex-journalist cabinet minister, the sanctimonious (rather than buffoonish) but spectacularly dishonourable Jonathan Aitken, comes to mind - and should serve as a warning to the current Westminster administration before there's a really catastrophic disaster..
