Nicholas Hare unveils £17.5m Essex BSF school

[FIRST LOOK + PLANS + DATA] Nicholas Hare Architects’ £17.5million Cornelius Vermuyden School has opened in Canvey Island, Essex

Designed by the practice as a sample school in Skanska’s winning bid for the Essex’s BSF programme, the school was officially opened at the start of this academic year.

The building has capacity for 900 pupils aged between 11-16 and is a predominantly a new-build scheme, but includes a retained gym and hall block that have been converted into a centre for design technology and art.

Sat at the end of a cul-de-sac, the two-storey school’s entrance is approached through a landscaped plaza framed by the fully-glazed library on one side and the sports hall on the other. This entrance leads to a central internal ‘street’ with a first floor gallery that links the teaching clusters, hall, library and other parts of the school.

The street widens and narrows along its length to create ‘eddy’ spaces off the main circulation for entrance, dining, meeting and group work, with natural light provided from the courtyards to the east and west.
