ZHA scoops planning for Moscow technopark

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has won planning permission for its competition-winning ‘technopark’ near Moscow for Russia’s largest bank

The 262,000m² building will host the IT division of Sberbank, which was founded in 1841, and accommodate up to 17,000 workers. Enabling works have already begun on the site and tenders are soon to be invited for a contractor.

The London practice defeated four other finalists including Foster + Partners and Italy’s Fuksas to win the high-profile job two years ago. The Sberbank technopark is thought to be one of the last projects designed by Zaha Hadid before her death in 2016.

ZHA project director Christos Passas said: ‘We are delighted to have received planning permission for this ambitious project. The necessity to innovate and collaborate within the workplace environment is fundamental to Sberbank’s operations.

‘Technopark’s design reconfigures working relationships by adopting a holistic approach to create an interconnected, multifunctional workplace ecology driven by the bank’s requirements for enhanced communication, interaction and diversification that promotes creativity and engagement.’

The scheme, which is set to complete in 2019, is part of the 400ha Skolkovo Innovation Centre development outside of Moscow.

Described as Russia’s Silicon Valley, Skolkovo will feature office buildings and laboratories dedicated to IT, biomedical, energy, nuclear and space innovations. Scott Brownrigg won a separate contest to masterplan a business park near the innovation centre five years ago.

The planning approval was announced just weeks after ZHA  won an international competition to regenerate a 13.9ha swathe of the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk.

The practice opened Moscow’s 21,184m2 Dominion Tower in September 2016 and completed the private Capital Hill Residence seven years ago.

  • Did someone forget to tell them that Moscow regularly sees 30 degree temperatures in summer? At least they have plenty of oil to burn to heat and cool that huge atrium and all the other noisy spaces that are connected to it
