Zaha Hadid Architects has won planning approval for this 54-storey mixed-use tower in Melbourne, described as a ’series of stacked vases’
The 178m-tall skyscraper, to be known as 600 Collins Street, will sit on the western edge of the Australian city’s central business district, and will house offices, shops, 420 flats and 350 bicycle parking spaces.
The 70,000m² scheme has been designed to use 50 per cent less energy than a ’conventional tower’, with its colonnaded sculptural facade tailored to ‘reduce direct solar gain’.
According to the practice, which is working with local outfit Plus Architecture, the external design takes its inspiration from the tower’s ‘mixed-use programme, converting the building’s overall volume into a series of smaller stacked vases’.
Project director at Zaha Hadid Architects, Michele Pasca di Magliano, said: ‘The design has been defined by Melbourne’s rich and diverse urban landscape, reinterpreted in a contemporary solution driven by the logical division of its overall volume that will enhance the city’s public realm with generous communal spaces.’
The approval was supported by the state of Victoria’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the City of Melbourne and Office of Victorian Government Architect.
