Wright & Wright wins Royal Academy of Engineering job

Wright & Wright Architects has been appointed to design the new Enterprise Hub at the John Nash-designed headquarters of the Royal Academy of Engineering

The job, which was won through an invited competition, will transform the Academy’s existing grade I-listed facilities, providing space for fellows to support younger engineers.

The Academy has been housed in its building on Carlton House Terrace, overlooking St James’ Park since 2007, and the new Enterprise Hub will span the lower ground floor of numbers 3 and 4 of the terrace.

Later amendments to the listed building will be removed to reveal the original 5m-tall brick interior, open up circulation routes, and reinstate the original natural light and ventilation into the centre of the plan.

Clare Wright, partner at Wright & Wright Architects, said: ‘Working with leaders in the construction field on a cutting edge project will be very stimulating. Combined with the fantastic possibilities of their site, this is a wonderful opportunity to do something very interesting.’

The scheme is set to be submitted for planning in the summer, with work on site due to begin in October 2015.
