Work starts on Pod’s house in listed walled garden

  • Comment

Construction has begun on a £2.5 million home, designed by architects Pod Newcastle, within a listed former potting shed and walled garden in Northumberland

The 464m² project at Newton Hall, Newton-on-the-Moor, near Alnwick, will ‘revitalise and safeguard’ existing Grade II-listed structures as well as creating a separate sunken living space which will be ’folded under the garden landscape’.

According to the Newcastle-based practice, the disused potting shed and greenhouses will be converted into ‘luxury accommodation’ linked via a glass walkway to a submerged wing housing a living room, gym, cinema, games room and a bar with a retractable skylight.

The walled garden, dating from 1771, used to supply fresh produce for Newton Hall but had fallen into decline.

The scheme, which was approved by Northumberland County Council earlier this year, is backed by Paul Hindhaugh of Hindhaugh Homes.

Pod’s project architect and director Martin Clay said: ‘As architects, you always want to work on challenging projects and for clients with ambition.

’[We’ve] designed a highly creative home that respects the site’s heritage and provides an outstanding vision of modern living.’

Pod was set up in 2007 by Craig and Ruth Van Bedaf in 2007 and currently employs 12 staff at its office in the Toffee Factory, Newcastle.
