Work starts on Foster's Manchester Maggie’s centre

Work is set to begin on Foster + Partners’ new £6million Maggie’s cancer care centre in Manchester

The first of the 6m-tall timber frames making up the main structure of the centre is set to arrive on site later this week.

The scheme at the Christie Hospital in Manchester is less than two miles away from where Foster grew up in Levenshulme.

The single-storey building is arranged around a central spine and features an integrated glass house providing a ‘space for people to gather and enjoy the therapeutic qualities of nature and the outdoors’.

The double Stirling Prize-winner is working with gardening guru Dan Pearson on the scheme.

The scheme, which will be Maggie’s eighteenth UK centre, is due to open in 2016.
