Work starts on Flanagan Lawrence’s contest-winning St Andrews music centre

Construction has started on Flanagan Lawrence Architects’ competition-winning scheme for a new music centre at the University of St Andrews

The AJ100 practice was selected ahead of Zaha Hadid Architects, Dundee-based Nicoll Russell Studios, Richard Murphy Architects from Edinburgh and Page\Park of Glasgow to win the commission in 2016.

Replacing temporary buildings and a car park on Queens Terrace, the project will create a new home for the university’s music centre, which is currently based inside the 1828 Younger Hall on North Street.

Flanagan Lawrence’s scheme, close to the medieval heart of the ancient Scottish university town, will deliver new performance, tuition, rehearsal and study spaces for undergraduate music students.

The new building, now dubbed the Laidlaw Music Centre, will also restore an historic quad and preserve the features of St Mary’s Quadrangle, ’while complementing the neighbouring St Regulus Hall student residence and the Bute Building’.

Jason Flanagan, creative director at Flanagan Lawrence said: ’St Andrews is Scotland’s first university, with a long tradition of academic excellence. Our aspiration for the music centre is to create a suite of spaces, which will each be acoustically excellent for their purpose to create a focal point for the community’s musical activities.

‘The quality of the acoustic in these spaces will allow the musical excellence of rehearsals and performances to flourish for students, teachers, performers and audiences alike.’

Events and groups supported by the university include the St Salvator’s Chapel Choir, St Andrews Voices festival, Byre Opera, and St Andrews and Fife Community Orchestra, run in collaboration with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the university’s orchestra in residence.

The scheme had originally been schedule to complete in 2018, but will not now finish until later in 2019.
