Wimshurst Pelleriti gets go-ahead for £10m Battersea tower

Up-and-coming practice Wimshurst Pelleriti has been granted planning for a 14-storey mixed-use tower in Battersea

The £10 million scheme will be the area’s tallest tower and will sit within a large green public space.

The council granted planning for the tower, which will sit on a site currently occupied by a two-storey industrial unit, due to its high-quality design and the architect’s argument that the area needed more density.

The development will feature commercial space on the ground and first floors and 12 storeys of one, two and three-bedroom flats. According to the Fulham-based practice, which is headed up by former Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners duo Will Wimshurst and Leonardo A Pelleriti, 33 per cent of the apartments will be affordable.

Each apartment opens out onto a private balcony, while the scheme’s basement will include a cycle store and flexible storage for each flat.

The project is due to start on site in 2016 and to complete in 2018.

Architect’s view

The proposed scheme sits in an area with strong potential for regeneration through the redevelopment of a number of sites which could together support a new community big enough to become a thriving neighbourhood. The site is opposite a downtrodden green area that is not currently considered a park by the Council. The client’s brief was to design a landmark building at the head of this ‘park’ area, which would become a community focus for the green space in front of it.

We proposed a small mixed use tower with a strong personality. Carefully designed to respond to the surrounding buildings and the green space in front, the northern and southern elevations, facing the parks to the front and rear, will be predominantly glazed. By making the entrance and ground floor double height and creating a small paved square outside the building’s entrance, the design creates an open, welcoming building with strong connections to the adjacent green areas.
