Liverpool City Council is set to appoint consultants to produce a masterplan for the city’s Cavern Quarter – aimed at capitalising on the tourist appeal of the Beatles
The council’s cabinet will meet next week to agree the preparation of a strategic regeneration framework for the area around Mathew Street, home to the legendary Cavern Club.
The masterplan, which would involve the redevelopment of derelict and under-used buildings along with public-space improvements, would be used to guide future development in the area.
Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson said: ‘The Beatles are known the world over, and not just by those who grew up with them. New audiences are discovering their music all the time and wanting to learn about the band’s roots.
‘The fact is we have a good Beatles tourism offer but it’s not at the level it could and should be – one that has a world-class wow factor that reflects the band’s timeless genius and global impact.
‘A lot of progress has been made in the past decade, and this new masterplan will seek to build on that and give us the tools to enhance the 24-hour appeal of the area around the Cavern and Mathew Street.’
The framework is expected to be accompanied by new powers of compulsory purchase for the council.
It will also include new visitor attractions and information points, and promote active ground-floor uses ‘to create a more vibrant and inviting environment’, according to the council.
A recent economic impact report found that the city’s Beatles-related industry had been growing at 5-15 per cent a year following the city’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2008.
The council said that the Beatles heritage industry was now worth £90 million a year and supported more than 2,000 jobs in the city.
