RIBA Stirling Prize video: The Whitworth by MUMA

Stuart McKnight of MUMA talks about how the practice approached its Stirling Prize-shortlisted Whitworth gallery project

He said the firm had been ‘surprised’ by the existing Manchester gallery’s lack of connection to the park in which it sits.

McKnight told the AJ: ‘The park had great potential. We wrapped the back of the existing building with a new promenade. That gave access to the new spaces we created but also reslved circultation within the existing building.

He added: ‘The extension has acted as a pressure release valve allowing us to better use the existing building.’

The £15 million scheme has doubled the size of the 125-year-old gallery’s space and created a new entrance to Whitworth Park.
