Video: The vision behind George Saumarez Smith's Parthenon mural

Throughout an event last month, architect George Saumarez Smith of Adam Architecture used Dulux Trade products to paint a representation of how the Parthenon in Athens might have looked in its original – painted – glory. In this video he explains the image and the process.

Painted on a sheet of 12mm MDF measuring about 2.3m high x 1.6m wide, the mural took four hours to complete.

Saumarez Smith said of the technique he used: ‘This is quite a challenge when you have several colours and each coat of paint needs some time to dry, so I prepared stencils in advance for the first three colours. These were painted with a sponge while the board was lying flat on a table.

‘Once the stencils were complete the board was propped up vertically against the wall and I added the bright colours - red, blue, green and bronze.’
