The AJ has unearthed this BBC film from the 1970s, showing Alison and Peter Smithson talking about their approach to housing and their seminal Robin Hood Gardens project

The Smithsons’ famous Brutalist estate in east London is set to be demolished to make way for new housing as part of a wider redevelopment programme.

In December (2014) Karakusevic Carson Architects won approval for a 242-home, three block scheme - officially phase 1B of the Blackwall Reach Regeneration - just south of the Smithsons’ blocks.

The first of the Smithsons’ 1972 ‘streets in the sky’ buildings – the west block – will not be flattened until late 2016 once phase 2 has been given the go-ahead.
