A London-based collective of architects and designers is among the finalists in the competition to mastermind the regeneration of seafront areas hit by Hurricane Sandy
Seeding Office’s scheme was chosen, along with three other concepts, from more than 110 design proposals in the FAR ROC contest for the ‘resilient development’ of Arverne East in New York state.
The practice’s vision for the 32ha plot on the Rockaway Peninsula was shortlisted against concepts by New York’s Ennead Architects, Toronto-based Lateral Office and Sweden’s White Arkitekter.
Describing its scheme, Seeding Office said: ‘Our proposal combines two different factors: the function of a barrier with the pleasure of a sea view. We played with different heights and curving to create a modular solution that works as a landmark allowing a constant access to the beach, without losing its properties of protection in case of flood.’
The finalists will each receive $30,000. The winner will be announced on 24 October, the anniversary of the hurricane.
