Echo Architecture and Fairhursts Design Group have both been awarded AJ100 New Member of the Year, after entering the AJ100 table in the same place
The two practices that take joint honours for this award occupy the same ranking at joint 73rd, and have both been shortlisted for other AJ100 awards – Echo Architecture for Business Breakthrough of the Year and Fairhursts Design Group for Sustainable Practice of the Year. But otherwise they couldn’t be more different.
In 2015 Echo Architecture had a staff of just six in its London office, but it set out to become the practice’s headquarters, and has grown bigger than the office in Riyadh. Estimated turnover for 2016/17 is £16 million and the practice has, not surprisingly, outgrown its offices, moving from Farringdon and Moorgate to Canary Wharf. Largely serving a client in Saudi Arabia, it expects growth to continue.

Fairhursts Design Group is also expecting to grow, but in a more modest manner. Its main office is in Manchester, with a much smaller operation in Hampshire. It celebrated its 120th anniversary last year and is proud of the fact that more than half the staff have been with the practice for 16 years or more. It is particularly proud of the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for the University of Nottingham, completed last year.
Only practices which have made it on to the AJ100 list for the first time – or have returned after a five-year absence – are eligible for the award, which recognises business success and quality of work.
