Turkish castle has a spongedown

Work has recently completed on the renovation of the Ocaklı Ada castle at Sile in Turkey, thought to date back to the Byzantine era.

But after the restored building was unveiled, Twitter users noticed the castle’s windows bore a striking resemblance to SpongeBob SquarePants. ‘They restored the Sile castle and turned it into a memorial for SpongeBob,’ exclaimed one tweeter.

The local government has responded with a strong defence of the work carried out. ‘The criticism on social media is not based on knowledge and it disregards the developments and the decisions made during the process of restoration,’ said Kemal Kutgün Eyüpgiller, a humourless adviser on the project.
