Threefold Architects wins planning for Kensington co-housing

Threefold Architects has won planning to extend a development of 18 mews houses in Kensington, west London

The practice has worked with 18 existing households on the scheme which it believes is ‘one of the largest cohousing refurbishments in London’.

It worked with the residents to form an association, develop a brief and create a design which ‘creates a uniform addition to the mews’.

The project will add a 30m2 extension onto each of the mews houses costing £100,000 each.

Constructed from prefabricated timber panels, the design draws lighting into the centre of the plan through large rooflights while maintaining a low profile above the existing building.

  • How do the Building Standards permit what will become a four storey house with no protected escape route from the four bedrooms in the uppermost storeys? The only exit would appear to be via the kitchen / living area.
