TDO to create 130m² home on garden plot in Hammersmith

TDO Architecture has gained planning permission for a three-bedroom home with a roof terrace on a tight site in west London

The practice will create the brick and Cor-ten steel building, dubbed Triagonal House, on land behind 136 Hammersmith Grove in Trussley Road, London W6.

Three objections were made to the plans, on grounds including loss of privacy and light for neighbouring properties and the impact on the character of the Hammersmith Grove Conservation Area.

But the proposal – backed by developer Lamington Group – was approved by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in line with a planning officer’s recommendation.

TDO’s plans involve excavating a basement to keep the profile of the house aligned with the surrounding Victorian terraces.

The house will be three storeys at the entrance, topped with a roof terrace, but just two storeys at the rear. It will contain a sunken, south-facing courtyard and a stairwell linking its two volumes.

TDO said: ‘The central courtyard serves three purposes: it brings abundant daylight into the property, allowing reception spaces to be located on the lower floor; it ameliorates overlooking of the adjacent property by orientating views inwards; and it accommodates the tree canopy of a mature, neighbouring sycamore tree, which had a tree preservation order on, which constrained the massing of the house.’

The scheme is expected to go out to tender later this year.
