Studio Seilern wins approval for Swiss concert hall

  • Comment

London-based Studio Seilern has won the go-ahead for a new £4.7 million concert hall, 1,437m above sea level in the Swiss Alpine village of Andermatt

The scheme will rework an existing building in the heart of the village square by lifting a major section of its roof and ‘increasing the effective acoustic volume’ from 2,000m³ to 3,500m³.

The project is part of a wider development to transform the traditional skiing resort into ‘one of the world’s finest year-round destinations’.

According to the practice, the proposals will convert the original venue, which had been predominantly used for conventions and events, into a state-of-the-art concert hall capable of hosting large orchestral concerts.

The extended roof will create a covered plaza and an extra entrance to the concert hall from the neighbouring hotels.

Studio Seilern Architects founder Christina Seilern said: ‘It has been an honour for us to work on this exceptionally unique project. The Andermatt Concert Hall will be a world-class facility set to rival cultural counterparts in Europe’s top capitals, providing Andermatt’s visitors and residents with a new cultural hub right in the heart of the historic village.’

Work is expected to start in January next year and complete by September.
