Student shows 2013: University of Sheffield

Laura Mark reviews the University of Sheffield’s end of year show

It is the school’s second year in its refurbished Arts Tower, and it is bedding in nicely. In a similar format to last year, work is shown on two levels; undergraduate upstairs and MArch below, making the most of the split-level accommodation. Alongside projects in Sheffield, Part 1 projects are set in a variety of locations including Newcastle, Hebden Bridge and Scarborough. The school’s involvement with live-build projects is still going strong. This year Part 2 students were involved in 10 different live projects in Sheffield, Doncaster and Manchester. These produced design proposals, toolkits and built structures for a number of community projects. The school remains head-and-shoulders above the other Yorkshire schools, with a steady stream of competent student work.

Standout unit Studio 16 entitled ‘The Palimpsest’ has produced a range of well-considered projects exploring the relationship of the past and the present in architecture.

Standout student Part 2 student Adam Hinton’s model for his Mackem Brew Yard stands out. The project looks at bringing independent production back in to Sunderland through a collective space for brewers.
