Andrew Thomas reviews Newcastle University’s end of year show
As an alumnus of the school, I’ve been an interested visitor to Newcastle’s end-of-year show for a number of years. With the benefit of this perspective, the latest exhibition is a highlight of recent years, with a depth and variety of work at both degree and masters levels. Once again Newcastle put on a two-city show, starting in the school then travelling to London for an intimate exhibition.
Standout studios/students Newcastle operates a structure of design research studios at Parts 1 and 2, and these cover a healthy range of themes that span the experimental and the practical. Making is a prominent theme in the stage 3 work, and the exhibition featured a feast of castings, models and maquettes. Agata Murasko’s ‘Institute of Cloud Colouring’ from Matt Ozga-Lawn’s and James Craig’s ‘Testing Ground’ studio was notable for the strength of the ideas and delightful models. The stage 6 work was more conventionally drawing-based, but work across the studios displayed a grounded maturity and intelligence. Nick Peters’ ‘In Blackpool’ project from Matthew Margetts’ ‘Quotidian Contraptions’ studio stood out for its wit, energy and beautiful drawings.
