Dav Bansal reviews the Birmingham School of Architecture’s end of year show
The final-year show at the Birmingham School of Architecture has a particular interest in making and production, and how this relates to the project as well as the heritage of the sites explored. There is a significant amount of investigation into innovative materials and tectonic components, with an array of models and working prototypes to illustrate the design process. Numerous projects reflect the diverse range of creative activity in the city, as well as demonstrating the ‘process’ being fundamental to their way of thinking.
Standout unit The standout unit was ‘Plastic’ in the final-year postgraduate show. It explored the landscape of Iceland with a focus on Reykjavik. The theme of ‘Scarcity and Abundance’ informed the projects’ agenda, including basalt mining for the production of carbon fibre by Matt Warren, and a large-scale knitting machine for the expanding textile industry by Claire Goldthorp with a working prototype on show.
Standout students One of the standout students was Ben Pipkin. His ‘CATA-LAB’ project builds on a scenario inspired by a visit to the activist group Can Masdeu in Barcelona. It seeks to establish a new architectural identity for Catalonia through an innovative process of 3D printing using clay.
