Stanton Williams and Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands submit plans for UCL East campus

Stanton Williams and Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands have submitted detailed designs for University College London’s (UCL) new Stratford campus in east London

The two projects – a pair of student accommodation tower blocks and an £80 million research facility – are the centrepieces of UCL East, on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The Russell Group university has submitted reserved matters applications to the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) for the two schemes on either side of the River Lea.

The plans include Stanton Williams’ Marshgate I, a 35,000m² centre for academic research and teaching facility located near Anish Kapoor’s ArcelorMittal Orbit structure.

The building features a central atrium space and groups of floors clustered into a series of ’neighbourhoods’. It also includes 1,000m² of photovoltaic panels and is targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands’  £90 million Pool Street West scheme is planned for the east bank of the river, near Zaha Hadid’s Aquatic Centre, and includes two towers of 13 and 17 storeys comprising 500 student flats.

The scheme also includes a three-storey academic podium building for the Future Living Institute, which will house at least five of the university’s faculties.

Outline approval for UCL East, masterplanned by LDA Design, was green-lit by London mayor Sadiq Khan in March.

Pool Street West, is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2021 academic year while Marshgate I will have a phased opening, starting in September 2022.

The campus is part of the wider Stratford regeneration and neighbours the East Bank cultural and arts project, formerly known as ’Olympicopolis’.

A hybrid application for the East Bank scheme designed by Allies and Morrison, O’Donnell & Tuomey and Barcelona-based Arquitecturia is expected to be submitted at the end of November.

*The value of the Pool Street West scheme was previously given as £40 million. This was based on initial estimated construction costs and has since been revised by UCL.
