Soup Architects’ holiday home on former Suffolk farm wins planning

Soup Architects has won permission to turn disused farm buildings in Suffolk into a family home with holiday accommodation

Babergh District Council planners gave the thumbs up to the scheme located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Shotley Peninsula between the rivers Stour and Orwell.

The scheme will transform a disused tractor store into a four or five bedroom house and replace a dilapidated grain store with two holiday homes.

The practice won approval for the project under the ‘country house clause’ – paragraph 79 (formerly paragraph 55) of the National Planning Policy Framework, which allows isolated houses in the countryside where the architecture is of ‘outstanding’ design quality.

A planning committee report said: ‘It is considered that the scheme achieves the design objectives, and the design based on the submitted visual images would achieve a high standard of contemporary design based on the raw materials of the existing basic farm structures.’

The site is part of a former farm, which included a single residential house and two substantially sized agricultural sheds set on a sloped site. These became redundant when the previous owner retired.

Detailed design is expected to start in September 2018 with a start date on site in 2019.
