Snøhetta wins contest for Italian cable car

  • Comment

Norwegian firm Snøhetta has won a competition to design a new cable car in Bolzano, Italy

The practice is understood to have seen off competition from Zaha Hadid Architects and Coop Himmelb(l)au to win the international invited contest.

The cable car will provide access up the Virgolo mountain at the foothill of the Alps, which has been largely inaccessible since the Bolzano’s historic funicular closed in 1976.

The competition-winning design features two ring-shaped stations both at the base and the top of the mountain.

The top station will house a restaurant, café, infinity pool, and meeting rooms while providing a view of the city below.

A newly created ‘mountain square’ at the top will also provide a flexible space for outdoor events including markets and open air concerts.
