Smith Maloney gets go-ahead to turn Bristol motorbike shop into leisure venue

  • Comment

Smith Maloney Architects has won the go-ahead to convert a former motorcycle showroom in central Bristol into a 1,650m² leisure venue

The plans plans for the 1950s building in Stokes Croft will overhaul the former shop and light industrial buildings on the site to create a multi-purpose space housing  a restaurant, two bars, a micro-distillery, micro-brewery and roof garden.

Backed by local developer Portland Brown, the ‘community-focused hospitality venue’ will spread over three floors and features a roof-mounted PV array and lightweight low-carbon structure and cladding.

According to the Bristol-based practice, the design ‘aims to create a sense of openness and connectivity with the streetscape’. A spokesperson said: ’The existing 1950s structures will largely be retained and expressed ‘as found’ while modern interventions will be used to create moments of drama.’

The plans have been supported by Bristol musician, DJ and music producer Daddy G, founding member of Trip Hop pioneers Massive Attack. Work is expected to complete next summer.
