Sheppard Robson has won planning for a £90 million student housing campus for the University of Liverpool
The 47,261m² scheme will see six of the university’s existing halls of residence replaced with three new student accommodation blocks at its Greenbank Campus.
The new buildings, which will create 1,370 ensuite bedrooms in total, increasing the number of rooms by 40 per cent, will be formed around three landscaped courtyards and range in height from five to eight storeys.
Clad in brick, the outer facades of the scheme, which sits in a conservation area, will reflect the surrounding buildings while internally it will be clad in metal shingles and render.
The project forms part of the university’s £250 million masterplan to upgrade and add to its existing accommodation at its city and Mossley Hill base.
The scheme is set to complete in two stages – one in 2017 and another in 2019.
The architect’s view
‘The new accommodation blocks will be created around three distinct landscaped courtyards and range in height from five to eight storeys making use of natural site levels. Their outer, or formal, elevations which face onto surrounding neighbourhood and conservation areas will be finished in brick referencing the character of existing buildings such as Derby Old Court. In contrast, the inner park facing facades to Rathbone and Derby Hall will be finished with shimmering metal shingles and Roscoe and Gladstone Halls with render introducing a range of tone, textures, richness and character to the inner courtyards and park setting.
‘The proposed window configuration provides vertical and horizontal rhythm across the facade. Projecting bay windows with feature surrounds are placed in a controlled manner and high level windows are moved vertically to break the parapet line and form dormer features.’
