Seymour-Smith wins planning for rural Passivhaus

  • Comment

Gloucestershire-based Seymour-Smith has won planning for this six-bedroom Passivhaus in the Cotswolds

The project, located on the edge of Moreton-in-Marsh in the Cotswolds, has won planning permission under Paragraph 55 of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), which allows new homes to be built in the countryside if they are of exceptional quality or are innovative.

The 600m² detached family home will be clad in home-grown British Larch and will feature internal exposed concrete walls.

Located on a sloping site, the six-bedroom house cuts into the contours of the slope, reducing its impact on the surrounding area.

The architect’s view

A key driver for the project was to provide the family (and village) with a contemporary home in a rural setting in a sensitive manner whereby the family would be able to integrate with village life.

Virtually every aspect of the proposed dwelling has been designed to impact its surroundings and the village as little as possible, including its form, materiality, fenestration, and positioning in the site.

Having studied the built forms in the countryside of the area it was a natural conclusion that the local typology of an agricultural barn/shed was a strong basis for the design of a new homes in the countryside.

Building upon our expertise in Passivhaus, this new country house aims to go far beyond Passivhaus certification, by championing innovative materials and technologies in order to minimise its reliance on non-renewable resources post-occupancy.
